How do I calculate the right sign size?
Measure the maximum distance from which the sign must be read, then size capital letters at roughly 25 mm of letter height per 10 metres of viewing distance for normal indoor light (increase 50 percent for low light, smoke-prone or outdoor glare zones). What sizes work at common distances?
- Up to 5 m (rooms, corridors): 150 x 150 mm to 200 x 150 mm boards; ~15 mm letters.
- 5 to 10 m (shopfloors, lobbies): 300 x 200 mm boards; ~25 mm letters.
- 10 to 20 m (warehouses, yards): 450 x 300 mm to 600 x 400 mm; ~50 mm letters.
- 20 m plus (highways, large yards): 900 x 600 mm and above with reflective sheeting; ~75 mm plus letters.
These are starting points – verify on site by printing a paper mockup at full size and reading it from the actual approach path before ordering fifty boards.
Where and how high should signs mount?
Centre of the sign at roughly 1.5 to 1.7 m eye level for general signs; exit and fire signs above doors at 2 to 2.5 m plus low-level photoluminescent strips near the floor for smoke conditions. Angle boards perpendicular to the approach path (flat-on-wall signs vanish down long corridors), keep 100 mm clearance from edges and obstructions, and never mount behind doors, racks or notice boards that migrate. Lighting matters as much as size – an unlit correctly-sized sign fails at night while a lit smaller one passes.
